One of the things that I really miss since beginning graduate school is marine science. I majored in it in undergrad and I truly love the subject. My absolute favorite undergrad class was a marine ecology course that included many field trips. My favorite field trips were to the tide pools. This is where some of my fondest memories from undergrad are from. My friends and I loved to go tide pooling and identifying the sea creatures there. I love it so much I have introduced my non-marine science friends to it and I even had my family take a day trip to the tide pools. Even though I have spent a significant amount of time tide pooling, it will always fascinate me; I always see something new and exciting. The picture of the sea star above is from the first time I found a sea star in the tide pools. The picture of me is from a day tide pooling with my sister and some family friends. I have decided that I am going to use this project to bring back my love for tide pooling.
A couple years ago I volunteered with an organization that teaches marine science to children from a lower socioeconomic neighborhood. The unit I worked on just happened to revolve around adaptations that animals in tide pools have. It involved taking groups of 3rd graders to the tide pools and teaching them more about it. Sharing something that I truly have a passion for is a memory I will never forget. This is why I have decided that I am going to teach about tide pools and identifying plants and animals in the tide pool areas. I am looking forward to this because I finally get to come back to my favorite subject and teach people about it! I will hopefully actually get some video of me out in the tide pools to show first hand some of the topics that I want to cover, as well as using screencasting for those topics that I cannot do in person.
